Experts Are Cautiously Optimistic About Developing Treatments That Can Treat Or Significantly Delay The Progression of Alzheimer’s, Helping All Involved In Aging Care.

Is it possible that the race towards finding a treatment or cure for Alzheimer’s disease may be entering the home stretch? Maybe, as over $900 million in funding is now available for research. Family members affected by the disease watch the trials proceed and anxiously await some positive news. The variety of studies – some more successful than others – seem to be pointing to a similar result. Rather than one solution to cure Alzheimer’s, it will take a combination of steps. Therefore, medications in conjunction with lifestyle changes in aging care will likely be needed to defeat Alzheimer’s.

One study that has results expected sometime this year is of particular interest in the aging care industry. It shows promising results in reducing beta-amyloid levels in the brain. This protein is thought to play a role in destroying the neuron. There is also a trial to track brain changes in those who are not yet showing symptoms, but who are at a bigger risk due to specific gene mutations. Finally, a vaccine study is in progress as well.  Researchers Say These Are Promising Times.

Ronald Petersen, the director of the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, offers hope. He said, “It’s a breath holding time for the field. I think the field is in so much of a need of some kind of positive indication that we are on the right track. I think we can have a little more optimism about drug trials that are coming down the road.”
